Snow and avalanche climates in the French Alps using avalanche problem frequencies

چکیده

Abstract Avalanches result from an interaction of weather and terrain, where past internal snow cover processes play important roles. So far, climatology was mainly based on data, as regional instability information, such avalanche activity, is scarce climatological time scales. We present a new approach to create simulations problem types reanalysis data cluster analysis. Analyzing the winters between 1958 2020 in French Alps, wet-snow situations dominated natural release. Dry-snow with non-persistent persistent weak layers occurred each at least one third days. Four typical patterns were identified. They follow main orography more northern regions cases inner-Alpine regions. In front-ranges southern early winter – for coastal climates. Agreement standard climate classification geography Alps suggests that mountain similar conditions can now be outlined. This method will inform forecasting facilitate change impact studies.

Snow and weather climatic control on snow avalanche occurrence fluctuations over 50 yr in the French Alps

Snow avalanche activity is controlled to a large extent by snow and weather patterns. However, its response to climate fluctuations remains poorly documented. Previous studies have focused on direct extraction of trends in avalanche and winter climate data, and this study employs a time-implicit method to model annual avalanche activity in the French Alps during the 1958–2009 period from its mo...

Snow and avalanche test sites French avalanche research: experimental test sites

This paper contains a short description of the experimental Lautaret site dedicated to avalanche dynamic studies. Since the seventies, many experimental campaigns allowed measuring different avalanche parameters such as velocity, height and pressure. Technical development have been also carried in this site and are presented here. More recently, a chute for physical modelling of avalanche motio...

Analysis of rock-fall and rock-fall avalanche seismograms in the French Alps

This study reviews seismograms from 10 rock-fall events recorded between 1992 and 2001 by the permanent seismological network Sismalp in the French Alps. A new seismic magnitude scale was defined, which allowed us to compare and classify ground-motion vibrations generated by these Alpine rock-falls. Each rock-fall has also been characterized by its ground-motion duration t30 at an epicentral di...

Computational snow avalanche simulation in forested terrain

Two-dimensional avalanche simulation software operating in three-dimensional terrain is widely used for hazard zoning and engineering to predict runout distances and impact pressures of snow avalanche events. Mountain forests are an effective biological protection measure against avalanches; however, the protective capacity of forests to decelerate or even to stop avalanches that start within f...

Snow Avalanche: Study and Detection using Remote Sensing Techniques

Snow avalanche is one of the most life-claiming calamities in the world. In avalancheprone regions, it is necessary to alert the population about such events beforehand to abate the effects. Hence it is important to build a snow avalanche detection system which will also detect landslides. To understand how an avalanche is started, snow physics needs to be understood which describes us about ty...
